The building complex that today houses the Region of Crete and the Courts (on Dikaiosinis Street) is used to be the Barracks of Saint Georgios.
During the 16th century, the Venetians built barracks to accommodate around 700 soldiers. It was 261 meters long and had 200 rooms.
Later, the building was used by the Ottomans for the same reason. They built it from scratch after the devastating earthquake of 1856. The barracks were also known as the “Kislades”.
